Our lease at HJMT is up in August. So, we’ve been looking around for office space in Garden City, Carle Place, Westbury, Hicksville, etc. My staff and I have seen numerous suites — some really bad and some really nice. But there is always something that isn’t right with the building.
For example, one of the buildings has a gym and charges $150 per employee to use it. The other building charges when you work over hours, like after 6. Most of the buildings have a bad view, overlooking the parkway or the parking lot. Some have a lunchroom while others don’t and the nearest place to eat is 10 miles away. Some have single pane windows while others have the wrong layout. It’s becoming very frustrating.
We decided to look further east in Melville, Woodbury and Plainview. The other day we met with three different people — one showed us a space in an “A” building in Melville; the other showed us a “B” building in Melville and the third showed us a “B+/A-” building in Garden City.
You may be asking what makes an “A” building or a “B” building… Well, the “A” building has a gym, restaurant and other amenities. The “B” building may have a deli but most likely just has offices.
It’s amazing how the prices have dropped since the last time I looked more than seven years ago. Buildings that were once untouchable, are now in reach. But, we want to make sure it’s the right space for our firm.
After seeing the space in Garden City, Kristie Galvani and I went to Roosevelt Field to pick up two new computers for our office. As we were walking toward the Apple Store, we saw a familiar face. It was the real estate agent who showed us the third building. He was comfortably sitting in a massage chair getting a massage when we walked over.
“What are you doing here?” he asked us. I think he may have been a little embarrassed.
“Ah, what are you doing?” we asked him and laughed.
“I had a little break in between two of my clients so instead of waiting in my car, I decided to come here,” he said.
The three of us laughed and Kristie and I went our merry way to the Apple store.
“How funny was that?” I said to her.
“It was a little awkward,” she said. We both laughed.
And then once we picked up our new computers, we left Roosevelt Field and decided to even look further at more office space. Hopefully, this process won’t be much longer!
