Book Review: Be The Magic of You – Tools to Transform Your Life By Teri Karjala, LPC, LMFT

I keep seeing negative posts on Facebook and it makes me sad. Why are people so unhappy? And, why are people so insecure?

When Teri Karjala approached me to read her new book, “Be The Magic of You – Tools to Transform Your Life,” I accepted. I wanted to understand the motivation behind people feeling negative about themselves.

Be the Magic of You is a wonderful self-help book. It’s motivating, encouraging and it reminded me of the book, “The Secret.”

She said, if you say something, it will come back to you in a big way. So for example, if you are negative and put out there that you can’t do anything right, you will never do anything right!

The author talks a lot about head trash. We all have it. We all tell ourselves, “we’re not good enough.”

Karjala says that we can change all that.

“The world is constantly trying to sabotage you,” the author writes. It all gets worse before it gets better. She says, you need to take risks and let things happen the way they are supposed to happen. “This will help you grow more than you imagine.”

She says when there is muck or head trash that equals negatively, the more negativity will surround you.

Karjala suggests:

  • Create a support group to help you overcome this negativity
  • Keep a journal
  • Exercise
  • Keep moving to shift away from the negativity
  • Finally, let it go… don’t get stuck on what people say to you.

Karjala says to “take risks.” She says nothing extraordinary was achieved by “playing it safe.” She says it’s important to practice spontaneity, create a bucket list and try something new daily.

One of the ways to move forward is to create a good support system and in the book, the author offers questions and helps you dig deep to find that system and put it into place. One of the most important things she says is to get the courage to ask for help.

People need to surround themselves with like-minded people. The author said that people will drag you down and there are the following four people in your life:

Negative Nelly

Dream Stealer

Energy Drainer

Toxic Person

You need to get rid of these folks or if you can’t at least be aware of their limitations and hold over you. Remember, people come into your life for a reason, some will last and some will be now and then (Billy Joel).

One of the ways in which you can change your life is to be grateful. You need to be grateful because that gratefulness will come back to you in more ways than you know. One of the ways to do this, the author suggests to keep a gratitude list. What are you grateful for? Also, keep a journal every day of what you are grateful for, write thank you cards to people who have helped you, and finally look for the silver lining in every situation. It is always there, even if you think it’s not.

Finally, the author suggests practicing every day.

I found the book uplifting and enlightening.
